Pastels: Fast, Furious and Fun!
Welcome to the world of pastels! If you are new to the medium or want to increase your comfort with pastels, this one-day workshop is for you. We will start with the basics: materials and equipment (and no, you don’t have to spend a lot to get started.) You will learn simple tricks and techniques unique to the pastel medium, including application methods, how to color mix, and how to preserve and protect your work. You will LOVE pastels!

Roughin’ It: Creating Texture with Pastels
Learning how to texturize your pastel painting surface opens up a world of creative possibilities. We will explore many of the commercial products available as well as experiment with some home-made options. The workshop will also cover how to integrate textural patterns into your composition as well as how when and why to tone your support. You will take home prepared supports.

This workshop will focus on understanding the structure of the face as planes. This knowledge will be used to improve accurate placement and construction of the features and will enhance your understanding of shading in portraiture. Studio Sundays
If you need a “reason” or “excuse” to get yourself in front of an easel and paint, please join us for Studio Sundays. The studio offers three hours of independent paint time with personalized instruction. It is focused and fun and a great way to spend a creative afternoon. Students work from photos of their own choosing. All media and experience levels are welcome. Advanced registration is requested.

Paint the SKY
This one day workshop will cover key elements to improve your skies. We will begin by discussing the “whys”: the basic natural principles governing skies and clouds. You will also learn to see these elements through the creative lenses of shape, value, color and design. Water, Water Everywhere
This workshop is all about water and how to paint it accurately and creatively. You will increase your understanding and ability to capture the color and the reflective quality of water. We will discuss ripples, waves, foam, foam holes and water’s edge…all the aspects of our ocean and shores. If you want to increase your ability to represent water in your paintings this workshop is for you. Open to all media. Proficiency in your medium is requested.

Pastel Painting Evaluations
Each of us has encountered, somewhere along the painting process, a stumbling block. Something just isn't right. You can try to sneak-up on it, look backwards in a mirror, stand on your head or otherwise try to trick it into revealing the problem...to no avail. Perhaps you want to generally improve your work or have it looked at with fresh eyes. In either or both cases, I am offering an opportunity to receive feed-back on your pastel paintings. Each work will be assessed on the following components: technique, composition, value and color. A written review will be provided.
The fee for the preview of two works is $25.00, payable at PayPal.
Once your transaction is complete, you will return to a web page on this site with instructions for mailing your images to dawnemillerart@gmail.com.
